From Internship to Leadership: UNU Jogja Informatics Student Entrusted to Lead Technology Development at a Medical Startup

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – An internship is not merely a learning opportunity for university students; it can also become a gateway to a professional career. This is the story of Fauzan Arisanto, a 2023 student of the Informatics Study Program at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja). What began as a Credit Conversion Internship Program has now led him to become the technology lead at a medical education startup.

Fauzan's journey began during his industrial internship in the sixth semester at PT Gadjah Medika Cendekia (Medskill Indonesia), a startup specializing in medical education technology. During the internship, he served as a Full Stack Developer, contributing directly to the development of several of the company's digital products.

"This internship has been an invaluable experience because I was not only able to learn but was also entrusted with developing products that are actually used by real users," Fauzan said.

One of the products he developed is Medskill Indonesia's e-learning platform, which serves as a learning resource for medical students and medical interns (co-assistant doctors) preparing for the Indonesian Medical Doctor Competency Examination (UKMPPD). The platform provides integrated and flexible access to learning materials, enabling students to prepare more effectively for the national examination.

Fauzan also developed a web-based Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) simulation platform. The system supports the digital implementation of practical medical examinations by managing examination stations, participants, examiner assessments, and the overall examination workflow.

One of the platform's key innovations is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a virtual standardized patient. This feature enables medical students to practice medical history-taking (anamnesis) through interactive conversations with virtual patients, providing a realistic simulation before taking the actual OSCE.

"We hope this technology will allow medical students to practice anytime using simulations that closely resemble real clinical situations. AI is not intended to replace lecturers or real patients, but to provide a more interactive learning medium," he explained.

In addition to developing educational platforms, Fauzan is currently working on a mobile application for medical mannequin rental services in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The application is designed to help educational institutions, professional organizations, and students gain easier access to medical mannequins for clinical skills training and educational activities.

His contributions have earned the company's continued trust. After completing his internship, Fauzan was invited to continue developing the company's digital products. More recently, he received an offering letter to join PT Gadjah Medika Cendekia (Medskill Indonesia) as Lead IT, where he will oversee technology development and lead the company's digital innovation initiatives.

For Fauzan, this opportunity proves that an internship pursued with dedication and commitment can become a bridge to a professional career even before graduation.

Fadmi Rina, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at UNU Jogja, expressed her pride in Fauzan's achievement. According to her, the accomplishment demonstrates that UNU Jogja students are capable of competing in the professional technology industry while they are still pursuing their undergraduate studies.

"We are very proud of Fauzan's achievement. By his sixth semester, he had already demonstrated the technical competencies required by industry, along with creativity in developing technology and the confidence to collaborate with partners beyond the university. This proves that UNU Jogja students are capable of competing professionally and creating technological innovations that have a real impact on society," she said.

Fadmi added that Fauzan's success was built on the qualities he consistently demonstrated throughout his studies.

"In the classroom, Fauzan is known as a friendly, disciplined, and active student who enjoys engaging in discussions and exploring new ideas. He not only understands theoretical concepts well but is also able to transform them into practical technological solutions. These characteristics have become valuable assets in his professional journey," she explained.

She also expressed hope that Fauzan's accomplishment would inspire other students to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom.

"We hope Fauzan's achievement will motivate other students, especially his peers, to develop their skills, expand their professional networks, and embrace opportunities beyond campus. He has shown that even before graduation, students can earn the trust of industry and take on leadership roles in technology development. We hope he will become a role model and inspire other UNU Jogja students to continue innovating, collaborating, and achieving excellence," she concluded.
