Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) held a Ngaji Civitas session as a space for intellectual and spiritual reflection for its academic community. The program, specifically organized for female members of the community (lecturers, administrative staff, and employees), featured Khotimatul Husna, S.Ag., M.H., a member of the UNU Jogja Ethics Council, at Masjid Raden Mas Djatmiko, UNU Yogyakarta, on Wednesday (25/2).
In the session, Khotimatul Husna presented the theme “Maintaining Human Relations,” drawing on the study of Kitab As-Sittin al-‘Adliyyah by Shaykh Faqihuddin Abdul Qadir. She highlighted its relevance in portraying Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy to all creation), particularly in the context of women.
“This book is important because it teaches authentic Islamic values that are close to everyday life. The seemingly small teachings it contains actually have a significant impact on human relationships. By understanding teachings rooted in hadith and the Islamic scholarly tradition, women can have a strong foundation in navigating their lives,” she said.
She further explained that the sources of Islamic law are not limited to the Qur’an and hadith, but also include ayat kauniyah (signs found in life and the universe). Therefore, religious understanding is not solely text-based, but also considers the evolving social context.
In discussing the fundamental principles of human relations, she quoted a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “A Muslim is a brother to another Muslim.” Through the qiraah mubadalah (reciprocal reading) approach, this meaning is understood equally—Muslim men and women are brothers and sisters to one another.
“This sense of brotherhood is not limited to fellow Muslims, but also extends to fellow citizens and to humanity at large. This value aligns with the principles of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah An-Nahdliyah, which emphasize balance, moderation, and the common good,” she explained.
She also highlighted attitudes that must be upheld in human relations, including avoiding injustice, acting fairly by placing things in their proper context, not neglecting those in need of help, and refraining from insulting or belittling others.
“Anything that harms oneself or others must be eliminated. This principle serves as an important foundation for building healthy and civilized social relations,” she stated.
Through the Ngaji Civitas program, UNU Jogja hopes that inclusive and just Islamic values will continue to be internalized within campus life and the wider community, fostering harmonious human relations grounded in Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin. [Latifah]
