PGSD Lecturer of UNU Jogja Promotes Pluralism Education, from Academic Forums to Schools

Yogyakarta, Indonesia - Sutiyono, M.Pd., a lecturer at the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) Study Program of UNU Jogja, continues to demonstrate his commitment to instilling the values of pluralism through various forums, both in academic settings and in practical education at schools.

In the academic sphere, Sutiyono participated in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on handling extremism and terrorism in the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Tuesday, September 2. The activity was organized as part of fundamental research by Cokroaminoto University. His presence at the forum marked the contribution of UNU Jogja educators in providing strategic ideas for preventing radicalism and strengthening social resilience through education.

Not stopping at the level of academic discussion, Sutiyono also engaged directly in schools as a motivator for pluralism education. At an event held at SMAN 1 Seyegan on Tuesday, September 9, he interacted with 80 students from the affirmation track. In the session, he emphasized the importance of nurturing high aspirations and fostering tolerance among peers with different ways of thinking and cultural backgrounds.

“Education not only provides knowledge but also shapes attitudes of mutual respect within diversity. Children must have big dreams, but they must also be able to live side by side peacefully,” said Sutiyono.

The activity was well received by students, who were encouraged to understand that diversity is a strength, not an obstacle, in achieving their future goals.

By being involved in both academic forums and motivational classes at schools, Sutiyono demonstrates that pluralism education must be present at every level: from policy-making to daily learning practices. This effort aligns with UNU Jogja’s mission to nurture a young generation that is not only academically competent but also tolerant, inclusive, and globally competitive. [Latifah]
