UNU Yogyakarta Leadership Congratulates Newly Elected Rais Aam and Chairman of PBNU for 2026–2031

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — The leadership of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Yogyakarta) extends its congratulations to KH. Miftachul Akhyar on his election as Rais Aam of the Central Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) and to KH. Abdul Hakim Mahfudz on his election as Chairman of PBNU for the 2026–2031 term. Both were elected during the 35th NU Congress (Muktamar ke-35 NU), held at Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Tambakberas, Jombang, East Java, from August 27–31, 2026.

“On behalf of the entire UNU Yogyakarta academic community, I would like to extend our congratulations and best wishes to KH. Miftachul Akhyar on his new responsibility as Rais Aam of PBNU and to KH. Abdul Hakim Mahfudz as Chairman of PBNU for the 2026–2031 term,” said UNU Yogyakarta Acting Rector Fahmy Akbar Idries on Monday, August 31.

“We believe that their leadership will make Nahdlatul Ulama increasingly united and generate a broader impact on civilization. UNU Yogyakarta is ready to move in alignment with PBNU to strengthen higher education and nurture young generations who are grounded in community values while remaining globally competitive,” he continued.

Fahmy added that the 35th NU Congress also provided an important platform for UNU Yogyakarta to contribute through various activities, including the NU Higher Education Forum (Forum Halaqah Perguruan Tinggi NU), the presence of a student admissions booth introducing the university to the Nahdliyin community, and opportunities for warm fellowship among Islamic scholars.

“Our active involvement reaffirms our commitment as a center of knowledge that continues to bridge the intellectual traditions of Islamic boarding schools with the advancement of the times,” he said.

A Moment of Nahdliyin Togetherness

In his remarks at the closing ceremony, newly elected PBNU Chairman KH. Abdul Hakim Mahfudz expressed gratitude for the smooth completion of the entire congress. He described the 35th NU Congress as an important moment to strengthen the unity and togetherness of Nahdliyin and to seek the blessings of Allah SWT.

“It is truly extraordinary to see how everything went smoothly. From the initial preparations and proceedings to the discussions, many solutions were reached. The enthusiasm of the participants and the spirit of togetherness were also extraordinary,” he said.

Meanwhile, newly elected Rais Aam of PBNU KH. Miftachul Akhyar called on Nahdliyin to establish strong foundations and principles in preparing for NU’s second century, particularly by reflecting on humanity’s role as stewards of the Earth.

“Hopefully, throughout this journey, we can contribute to improvement, address our shortcomings, and work for the benefit of the people,” he said.

As with its opening, the 35th NU Congress was also closed by President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto. He congratulated NU on the successful and peaceful congress and encouraged the organization to work together to improve the welfare of the Indonesian people.

“NU has shown the entire nation how an organization with tens of millions of members, thousands of Islamic boarding schools, and tens of thousands of Islamic scholars can hold a congress successfully, peacefully, and harmoniously. The state, the nation, and the people are waiting for NU’s service in the days, months, and years ahead,” he said.

Blessings and Opportunities for UNU Yogyakarta

As part of this major NU gathering, UNU Yogyakarta contributed through a number of activities. These included intellectual contributions from Acting Rector Fahmy Akbar Idries on the development of NU-affiliated higher education institutions (PTNU) during the NU Higher Education Forum, as well as the participation of members of the university community in various forums and activities throughout the congress.

UNU Yogyakarta also opened a New Student Admission (PMB) Corner at the congress venue. The booth served as an information center for prospective students to learn about UNU Yogyakarta’s academic programs and facilities, including hundreds of scholarship opportunities and special admission offers.

The 35th NU Congress also brought a new international collaboration opportunity for UNU Yogyakarta through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Strengthening the Three Pillars of Higher Education with Parallaxnet, an innovative learning platform based in California, United States.

The MoU was signed by Parallaxnet CEO Mazhar Durrani and, representing UNU Yogyakarta’s Acting Rector, Vice Rector for Partnerships and Creative Funding Ian Agisti Dewi Rani.

As part of the Nahdlatul Ulama Higher Education Institutions (LPTNU), UNU Yogyakarta also welcomed the launch of Ahlussunah Wal Jamaah An-Nahdliyah: Buku Ajar untuk Perguruan Tinggi Nahdlatul Ulama, a textbook authored by a number of NU academics.

The book is expected to serve as a reference for lecturers and students in their academic courses and contribute to strengthening academic standards and quality across NU-affiliated higher education institutions, including UNU Yogyakarta.*
