UNU Jogja Prepares for KHAS Zone Development, Strengthening Commitment to a Halal, Safe, and Healthy Campus Cafeteria

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) continues to strengthen its commitment to creating a healthy and comfortable campus environment through preparations for the development of a KHAS Zone (Halal, Safe, and Healthy Culinary Zone) within its campus cafeteria. As part of this initiative, cafeteria tenants and cafeteria management representatives participated in the 2026 Yogyakarta KHAS Zone Development Workshop held at Porta by Ambarukmo Hotel on Wednesday, June 17.

The KHAS Zone Development Program is a collaborative initiative between Bank Indonesia’s Yogyakarta Representative Office and the Halal Center of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, involving several universities across the Special Region of Yogyakarta, including UNU Jogja. The program aims to ensure that campus cafeterias meet food safety standards, environmental health requirements, and halal principles that provide protection and comfort for consumers.

During the workshop, participants received training from the Sleman Regency Health Office on various topics, including food regulations, food safety and foodborne diseases, personal hygiene, equipment sanitation, food hygiene and sanitation principles, and cafeteria environmental management.

The Head of the Halal Centre of UNU Jogja, Dr. Fahmaninda Listiyani, B.Ecs (Hons), M.P.E., together with the campus cafeteria management team, attended the workshop as part of the university’s efforts to prepare its cafeteria to meet KHAS Zone requirements.

She explained that the workshop was an important step because one of the key requirements for obtaining KHAS Zone recognition is that every cafeteria tenant must possess a Food Hygiene and Sanitation Certification Label.

"We highly appreciate the KHAS Zone Development Program because it aligns with UNU Jogja’s commitment to providing halal, safe, healthy, and high-quality cafeteria services for the entire academic community. Through this mentoring and training program, we gain a better understanding of the standards that must be met while preparing cafeteria tenants to undergo the certification and assessment process," she said.

Following the training sessions, the Health Office will conduct visits and inspections to cafeterias applying for KHAS Zone certification. Tenants that successfully meet the required standards will receive official certification labels as proof that they have passed food hygiene and sanitation assessments.

According to Fahmaninda, the process is not merely intended to fulfill administrative requirements but also to foster a sustainable culture of food safety across the campus environment. As a result, the cafeteria can become a space that supports the health, comfort, and productivity of the university community.

Through its active participation in the program, UNU Jogja hopes to establish a campus cafeteria that not only serves halal food but also fulfills food safety and environmental health standards.

"The presence of a KHAS Zone on campus is expected to enhance service quality for the academic community while serving as a model for healthy, safe, and sustainable cafeteria management practices," she concluded. [Latifah]
