Yogyakarta, Indonesia — Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) held a Grand Khataman event in commemoration of the Month of Indonesian Women Ulama Awakening at the Raden Mas Djatmiko Mosque, 5th Floor of UNU Jogja, on Friday (May 22).
The event was organized by the Dewan Kemakmuran Masjid (DKM) Raden Mas Djatmiko UNU Jogja as a spiritual initiative to revive the tradition of Qur’an recitation while honoring the contributions of women ulama to the development of Islam in Indonesia.
The Month of Indonesian Women Ulama Awakening was officially launched on May 1, 2026, by Kongres Ulama Perempuan Indonesia (KUPI) under the theme “The Awakening of Women Ulama for an Indonesia Free from Violence.” The annual commemoration aims to appreciate the strategic role of women in religious, educational, and social spheres.
Event coordinator as well as Director of Pusdeka UNU Jogja, Rindang Farihah stated that the activity was not only a religious gathering, but also a momentum to emulate the struggles of women ulama who have made major contributions to education, da’wah, and social life.
“Through this Grand Khataman, we aim to create a spiritual space that reminds us of the important role of women ulama in the history of Indonesian Islam while fostering togetherness and meaningful contribution within the campus environment,” she said.
Through the event, participants were invited to reflect on the important role of women in the history of Islamic preaching, education, social movements, and the strengthening of moderate and inclusive Islamic values within society.
“The Grand Khataman also serves as a spiritual gathering space among communities within the campus while strengthening a religious spirit that is friendly, open, and beneficial for all,” she added.
The event also involved collaboration between KUPI, DKM UNU Jogja, UKM JQH UNU Jogja, and the Qur’an Sign Language Teachers of UNU Jogja. The collaboration reflects a commitment to providing inclusive spaces for worship and Qur’anic learning for all communities, including persons with disabilities.
The involvement of sign language Qur’an teachers further demonstrates UNU Jogja’s commitment to creating inclusive worship and Qur’anic learning spaces accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities.
Beyond being a religious event, the activity also reflects UNU Jogja’s commitment as a university in Yogyakarta to continuously integrate spiritual values, humanity, and respect for women’s roles into academic and social life on campus. [Latifah]
