China - Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) has officially received USD 3.65 million (around Rp60.2 billion) from GEM Co., Ltd., marking the first stage of funding for the establishment of the China–Indonesia Faculty of Future Metallurgy.
The funds will be used to acquire and register 14,801 square meters of land in Yogyakarta, which will host the future faculty’s academic and research complex. This land acquisition is the opening milestone of a larger USD 30 million (around Rp495 billion) investment that GEM and its industry partners have committed to the project.
Building a Hub for Metallurgical Innovation
The China–Indonesia Faculty of Future Metallurgy is envisioned as a world-class education and research hub in advanced metallurgy, sustainable resource utilization, and green energy materials. The campus will feature state-of-the-art laboratories, lecture halls, and student dormitories, providing facilities that meet international standards.
The academic programs will emphasize urban mining, circular economy practices, and energy materials research, with offerings ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate levels. In addition, students will gain access to scholarships, visiting scholars, joint research initiatives, and industrial training opportunities through GEM’s global network. The first intake of students is expected in 2026.
GEM Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shenzhen, China, is a global pioneer in urban mining and new energy materials, best known for large-scale recycling of electronic waste and spent batteries. The company has developed a dual-track business model of “urban mining + new energy material manufacturing,” supplying key industries worldwide while promoting sustainable practices.
The initiative has been strongly supported by Prof. Xu Kaihua, Chairman of GEM, who is regarded as one of China’s leading advocates of the circular economy. Prof. Xu has consistently emphasized the importance of linking talent development with industrial innovation, and his leadership has been central to making this international collaboration possible.
Strengthening Indonesia’s Downstream Strategy
Indonesia has placed a high priority on developing downstream mineral industries, aiming to shift from exporting raw materials to becoming a leader in high-value manufacturing. The establishment of the Faculty of Future Metallurgy at UNU Jogja is expected to contribute directly to this national agenda by producing graduates with specialized expertise and fostering innovation in sustainable metallurgy.
“This initial funding marks a concrete step forward, turning plans into action,” said Widya Priyahita Pudjibudojo, Rector of UNU Jogja. He continued, “We are grateful for GEM’s trust and for the visionary leadership of Prof. Xu Kaihua, which aligns with Indonesia’s ambition to build global excellence in metallurgical research and education.”
With the land secured, UNU Jogja and GEM are preparing for the next phase: construction of academic, research, and residential facilities, laying the foundation for Yogyakarta to become a regional hub for sustainable metallurgical innovation. [Nabil]
