As Indonesia’s Pharmaceutical Industry Grows, UNU Jogja Equips Pharmacy Students for the Future of Modern Drug Distribution

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia’s pharmaceutical industry is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by downstream industrial development and the strengthening of strategic national industries. Alongside pharmaceutical manufacturing, demand is rising for professionals with expertise in drug distribution systems, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and pharmaceutical supply chain management.

This direction aligns with the Indonesian government's efforts to accelerate industrial development. Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, has emphasized the important role of universities in preparing graduates who can meet workforce demands in strategic sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry.

Responding to these developments, the Pharmacy Study Program at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) continues to strengthen industry-oriented learning through collaboration with pharmaceutical professionals.

As part of this commitment, the program organized a public lecture titled "Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Trends in Pharmaceutical Distribution" on Thursday (26 June). The session featured apt. Hikmah Dinamica, S.Farm., Distribution Coordinator at PT Anugrah Argon Medica Yogyakarta Branch, and was attended by Pharmacy students from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts.

During the lecture, Hikmah explained that pharmaceutical distribution plays a critical role in maintaining the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medicines throughout the supply chain—from manufacturers to healthcare facilities and ultimately to patients.

"Pharmaceutical distribution is much more than delivering medicines. It involves quality management, professional ethics, regulatory compliance, documentation, and supply chain management in accordance with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards," she said.

Students were introduced to key components of pharmaceutical distribution, including quality management systems, documentation procedures, storage and transportation standards, cold chain management, inspection processes, and quality control practices that underpin the pharmaceutical industry.

"Effective pharmaceutical distribution ensures that every medicine reaching patients continues to meet established standards of quality, safety, and efficacy," Hikmah added.

Expanding Career Opportunities for Pharmacy Graduates

Beyond understanding drug distribution systems, students also explored the broad range of career opportunities available to pharmacy graduates. These include positions in pharmaceutical manufacturing, pharmaceutical wholesalers, hospitals, community pharmacies, healthcare logistics companies, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical supply chain management, and government agencies responsible for medicine regulation and public health services.

Dean of the Faculty of Halal Industry at UNU Jogja, Listiana Hidayati, said the Pharmacy Study Program continuously aligns its curriculum with industry needs by combining academic learning with practical insights from experienced professionals.

"We aim to prepare pharmacy graduates who possess not only strong scientific knowledge but also a solid understanding of industry practices, professional ethics, and the adaptability required to thrive in a rapidly evolving healthcare sector. Collaboration with industry partners is an essential part of our educational approach," she said.

Meanwhile, Meki Pranata, a lecturer in the Pharmacy Study Program and moderator of the event, emphasized that direct engagement with industry practitioners provides students with valuable insight into the realities of professional practice.

"Our students will eventually enter professional practice. Before beginning internships and clinical experiences, they need to understand how pharmaceutical distribution operates, the standards applied across the industry, and the competencies expected of future professionals," he explained.

Through partnerships with industry, UNU Jogja continues to strengthen experiential learning opportunities that bridge academic knowledge with professional practice. By exposing students to current industry trends and challenges, the university seeks to produce pharmacy graduates who are adaptive, competent, and well-prepared to contribute to Indonesia's healthcare system and the continued development of its pharmaceutical industry.
