Yogyakarta, Indonesia – The Faculty of Information Technology (FTI) at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) held a public lecture entitled “Working in the Oil and Gas Industry and Opportunities for Renewable Energy Development” at The Forum, 3rd Floor of UNU Jogja, on Tuesday, June 9.
The event featured Dimas Ramadhan Abdillah Fikri, S.T., M.Sc., Specialist in Technology Innovation Downstream & New Renewable Energy (NRE) at PT Pertamina, who shared insights into careers in the oil and gas industry, the challenges of renewable energy development, and the competencies required to work in globally competitive companies.
In his opening remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at UNU Jogja, M. Syamsiro, Ph.D., emphasized that learning activities at the university continue to be aligned with industry needs to ensure graduates possess competencies relevant to the workforce.
“Higher education must stay close to industry. What industry needs today should be reflected in what is taught on campus,” he said.
According to him, the presence of practitioners from major companies such as Pertamina provides students with real-world insights into professional work culture and the challenges they will face after graduation.
He also noted that Pertamina offers opportunities for graduates from various disciplines, including Informatics and Electrical Engineering. Therefore, students need to prepare themselves well, as competition to join national and multinational companies is highly competitive.
“We hope students can build broader collaboration with industry, including Pertamina, so they can gain a clearer understanding of the competencies required in the professional world,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dimas Ramadhan Abdillah Fikri explained that technical expertise alone is not enough to succeed in industry. Engineers are expected to bridge the gap between management objectives and operational implementation in the field.
“An engineer must be able to communicate directions and targets from management and translate them into actionable steps that can be understood and carried out by operational teams,” he explained.
According to Dimas, one of the most important skills is communication. Engineers are not only responsible for understanding technical aspects of their work, but also for translating company goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) into concrete actions that can be implemented by their teams.
“Therefore, the key skill is communication. When someone understands the company’s objectives and can communicate them effectively to the team, work processes become much more efficient,” he said.
The participation of a practitioner from PT Pertamina is expected to further strengthen students’ understanding of workforce demands. Through collaboration with various industry partners, UNU Jogja, as a globally oriented university in Yogyakarta, continues to prepare graduates who are not only academically excellent but also equipped with communication, leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving skills needed in today’s modern industries.
