LLDIKTI V Intensively Assists UNU Jogja in Preparing Opening of Metallurgical Engineering Program

Yogyakarta, Indonesia - The process to establish UNU Jogja’s new study program, Metallurgical Engineering for the Future, is moving forward. Various preparations are underway to launch a program that will focus on education in environmentally friendly energy, particularly urban mining.

As part of that process, UNU Jogja again held a mentoring session with the Higher Education Service Institution (LLDikti) Region V at the UNU Jogja campus on Tuesday, June 3. The team’s visit was to evaluate the proposal documents for the opening of UNU Jogja’s Metallurgical Engineering study program.

Acting Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UNU Jogja, Prof. Nafiatul Umami, appreciated the presence of the LLDikti Region V team for helping to advance the preparation stages of the new program. 'Thanks to LLDikti’s guidance, we have been able to prepare everything to the fullest,' she said, accompanied by several university leaders, the Quality Assurance Institute (LPM) team, and the preparation team for the Future Metallurgy Faculty. 

After the meeting with LLDikti Region V on Wednesday, April 23, UNU Jogja conducted an internal assessment and completed data and various required documents. Two of these concern human resources (HR) readiness and the curriculum. 'We have prepared the Metallurgical Engineering curriculum with national and international benchmarks,' she stated.

From this meeting, Prof. Nafiatul hopes LLDikti Region V will again provide input and guidance to complete the regulatory process so that the next steps proceed smoothly. 'With our young team, we are ready around the clock to prepare everything, so we can receive good feedback and submit as soon as possible,' she said.

LLDikti Region V representative Zanuwar Faruzi stated that LLDikti is ready to support higher education development, including the establishment of new study programs. 'Our visit to UNU Jogja is to ensure that the requirements for opening a new program are met, including data on the lecturers who will teach in the program,' he said. 

The establishment of the Future Metallurgy Study Program is the result of a collaboration between UNU Jogja and GEM Co. Ltd., a global urban mining company based in China. The faculty will comprise academic programs, an urban mining research center and creative hub, as well as a metallurgical innovation laboratory that will be housed in a new nine-story building and a three-story student dormitory. 

The cooperation agreement between UNU Jogja and GEM Co. Ltd. was signed in China earlier this year. This collaboration has also received support from several ministries and the Vice President’s Secretariat. At its peak, the Future Metallurgy Faculty was introduced at the Global Business Summit during the Chinese Prime Minister’s visit to Jakarta last week. [Arif]
