Electrical Engineering Students Develop Automated Parking System Using Embedded Systems

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Creativity and problem-solving skills were demonstrated by Electrical Engineering students through the development of an Automatic Parking System as a Final Semester Examination (UAS) project for the Embedded Systems course. The project, carried out by Electrical Engineering student Dimas Ananta Kusuma together with one teammate in early 2025, successfully delivered a real-time automated parking system without manual operators.

The system was designed to improve parking efficiency through the integration of multiple electronic components into a single framework. Key components include infrared (IR) sensors to detect vehicle presence in each parking slot, servo motors to automatically control the parking gate, an LCD display to show real-time slot availability, and a power supply system to ensure stable energy distribution across the system.

According to Dimas, the biggest challenge in the project was not only hardware assembly, but ensuring that all components worked in synchronization. The team carried out extensive testing and debugging, including improving inaccurate sensor readings, adjusting servo timing to prevent mechanical conflicts, and ensuring real-time system responsiveness.

“What stood out the most was the process. We learned that building a system is not just about making each component work, but about making everything work together,” he said.

The experience provided practical insight into the real-world application of embedded systems. It also served as a platform for students to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and technical skills in designing technology-based solutions.

For Dimas, the Automatic Parking System became an important foundation in his academic journey in Electrical Engineering. Now in his sixth semester, he reflects on the project as a starting point that strengthened his commitment to continue growing in the field of electrical engineering.

“Engineering is not just about making things work. It’s about making things work together,” he added.

Through this simple yet applicable innovation, Electrical Engineering students demonstrated that innovation can emerge from the classroom. With experimentation and persistence in facing technical challenges, students not only learn theory but also create solutions relevant to future needs. [Latifah]
