Yogyakarta, Indonesia - In a strategic move to solidify its path toward becoming a world-class institution, Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama (UNU) Yogyakarta hosted the "Sarasehan Arah Pengembangan UNU Yogyakarta" (Forum on the Strategic Direction of UNU Yogyakarta) at its Integrated Campus on Thursday (June 7). The forum brought together prominent professors and senior academics from leading universities across Yogyakarta to contribute visionary insights for the university's long-term roadmap.
Acting Rector of UNU Yogyakarta, Dr. Fahmy Akbar Idries, stated that this forum is instrumental in charting the university's course toward its 2045 goals. "We are highly receptive to diverse perspectives. This is part of our commitment to building an academic ecosystem that is high-quality, inclusive, and responsive to global challenges," he said.
Governance Transformation and Global Competitiveness
The Chair of the Nahdlatul Ulama Higher Education Institution Association (LPTNU), Prof. Ainun Naim, Ph.D., emphasized that the university's momentum relies on the synergy of talent, resources, and robust governance. This was reinforced by Prof. Titi Savitri, Ph.D., who highlighted institutional autonomy and accountability. Furthermore, Prof. Djamhari, M.P., outlined three strategic pillars for UNU Yogyakarta: clear differentiation, rapid acceleration, and the building of a strong national and international reputation.
Advancing Science, Tech, and Aswaja Annahdliyah Values
Aligning with the vision of developing Science and Technology (S&T) based on Aswaja Annahdliyah values, Prof. Ika Dewi Ana, Ph.D., encouraged the exploration of future scientific fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), circular economy, and advanced materials. Conversely, Prof. Susetiawan, reminded the forum that scientific development must remain anchored in a "sense of humanity" and strong morality—the hallmarks of Nahdliyin intellectuals.
In line with this, Prof. Emma Marhumah, M.Pd., highlighted the importance of contextualizing Islamic studies to meet the evolving needs of the pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and madrasah communities in the modern era.
Academic Excellence and Community Benefit
Enhancing the "Tridarma" (the Three Pillars of Higher Education) was the focus of Prof. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., who called for collective institutional unity to build a global reputation. From a technical perspective, Prof. Ali Mustadi and Prof. Abdul Rohman advocated for the implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and the strengthening of high-impact collaborative research.
In terms of community service, Prof. Purwo Santoso underscored the role of the Social Laboratory as a "living laboratory" to mature UNU Yogyakarta’s contribution to the benefit of humanity (kemaslahatan). Concluding the forum, Prof. Sugiyono expressed his hope that a focus on educational quality and accreditation would establish UNU Yogyakarta as a top-tier choice for higher education.
Through this forum, UNU Yogyakarta remains optimistic about achieving its vision of becoming a leading, globally competitive center for science and technology development, deeply rooted in Aswaja Annahdliyah values for the greater good of humanity by 2045. [Arif]
