UNU Jogja Agribusiness Department Explores Best Practices of Japanese Farmer Cooperatives in Expert Forum

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — The Agribusiness Study Program of UNU Jogja held an Expert Forum Discussion titled “From Farm to Consumer: Best Practice of Integrated Agribusiness Marketing Systems in Japanese Farmer Cooperatives” on Wednesday, December 10 at The Forum, UNU Yogyakarta Campus. The event featured Dina Faoziah, Ph.D., an agricultural cooperative practitioner in Japan, and was attended by more than 100 students. The session was moderated by the Head of the Agribusiness Study Program, Nur Saudah Al Arifa D., S.T.P., M.Sc.

In her presentation, Dina explained Japan’s geographical characteristics, particularly its limited agricultural land. Of the country’s total 378,000 km² of land area, 73 percent consists of mountainous regions, leaving only 12 percent available for agriculture. This condition shapes Japan’s farming system into one that is small-scale yet highly intensive, technologically advanced, and focused on premium-quality production.

“Land limitations do not prevent Japan from producing high-quality agricultural products. Instead, these limitations drive innovation, strengthen efficiency, and position cooperatives as a key pillar,” Dina noted.

Demographic Challenges and Modernization of Japanese Agriculture

Dina emphasized that Japan is currently facing significant demographic challenges, including a shrinking farming population and an increasing average age of farmers, now above 65 years. This situation has accelerated the adoption of modern technologies such as drones, soil sensors, automation, and high-value production systems like premium fruits and wagyu beef.

Despite the average farmland size being less than 2 hectares, fertile soil conditions and strict production management allow Japanese farmers to successfully produce high-quality commodities with strong branding.

Urban Farming and Direct Market Systems

Dina also highlighted the rise of urban farming in major metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. Through chokubaijo, or direct farmer-to-consumer markets, consumers can access fresh produce with shorter supply chains and more transparent pricing. This system continues to grow, driven by public awareness of food quality, safety, and sustainability.

Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA): The Backbone of Japanese Agriculture

A key highlight of the session was the strategic role of the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), or nokyo. JA is recognized as one of the most influential cooperative systems in the world because of its ability to integrate production, marketing, finance, extension services, and policy advocacy into a unified institutional framework.

Dina explained that JA consolidates and standardizes agricultural outputs from small-scale farmers, ensuring consistent quality across production regions. It provides essential agricultural inputs through collective procurement, enabling farmers to access affordable and efficient production materials. JA also plays a crucial financial role through JA Bank and JA Kyosai, offering banking and insurance services tailored to farmers’ needs. Additionally, the cooperative delivers technical guidance through professional extension officers who support farmers in adopting new technologies and improving productivity. Beyond agriculture, JA advocates for national food and agricultural policies while also providing community services such as retail stores, hospitals, and disaster-response support.
Through JA Zen-noh, the cooperative manages national logistics, feed imports, and the export of premium agricultural products.

“Without JA, sustaining small-scale farmers in Japan would be extremely difficult. JA serves as a vital bridge connecting farmers with markets, capital, technology, and policymaking,” Dina emphasized.

UNU Jogja Agribusiness Department’s Commitment

In her closing remarks, Nur Saudah Al Arifa reaffirmed that the Expert Forum is part of the department’s commitment to broadening students’ perspectives on global agribusiness practices.

“The Japanese model demonstrates that strong institutions, farmer consolidation, and continuous innovation can enable geographically limited agriculture to remain resilient and competitive. This is an important lesson for Indonesia’s agribusiness development,” she said.

She added that students must understand the agribusiness ecosystem comprehensively—from production to marketing—to navigate the complexities of the modern agricultural sector. [Latifah]
