Yogyakarta, Indonesia — Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) continues to strengthen students’ Islamic competencies from the very beginning of their academic journey. One of these efforts is reflected in the implementation of a Qur’an reading assessment for the Class of 2025 new students, as a fundamental skill that must be mastered by all UNU Jogja students.
The Qur’an reading assessment was conducted at Raden Mas Djatmiko Mosque, UNU Yogyakarta Campus. The activity aimed to measure students’ initial ability to read the Qur’an correctly and fluently in accordance with the rules of tajwid, while also serving as a basis for designing a structured and sustainable religious development program.
Director of Internal Pesantren Affairs at UNU Jogja, Ahmad Hujaj Nurrohim, explained that the assessment was not merely evaluative, but rather an initial step in mapping students’ abilities.
“This assessment is intended to identify students’ Qur’an reading proficiency so that the guidance provided can be well targeted and tailored to each student’s needs,” he said.
Based on the assessment results, students will be classified into several levels according to their Qur’an reading proficiency. Those who are deemed to have insufficient mastery will receive intensive guidance and training to significantly improve their reading skills.
Through this intensive training, students are expected to be well prepared to engage with the wider community with strong Qur’an reading abilities, while also understanding and practicing the values of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja), which characterize UNU Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, students who are already proficient will be offered advanced development programs such as tilawah and tahfidz. [Latifah]
