Yogyakarta, Indonesia — The Faculty of Economics at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama (UNU) Jogja held a public lecture titled “Beyond Profit: Integrating Social and Environmental Impact into Business Strategy in the Era of 5.0” at The Forum, 3rd Floor, UNU Yogyakarta Campus, on Tuesday, November 11. The event featured Oki Earlivan Sampurno, S.Mn., M.B.A., M.Sc, Special Staff to the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, as the keynote speaker.
In his presentation, Oki Earlivan emphasized that modern businesses can no longer operate with a profit-only mindset. According to him, companies that aim to survive in an era of disruption must view themselves as moral institutions responsible for both people and the planet. He referred to this concept as the moral purpose of enterprise, a new foundation for sustainable business.
He explained that the world is currently facing three major waves of disruption—environmental, technological, and social ethics. Rising global temperatures, climate crisis threats, the rapid expansion of AI, and shifting values among younger generations are forcing companies to adapt. “The world is not facing a business crisis. The business world is facing a moral crisis,” he stressed.
Oki also highlighted the evolution of capitalism from shareholder capitalism to human-centered capitalism. In this new phase, a company’s success is measured not only by profit but also by its contributions to human well-being and environmental preservation. This approach aligns with the vision of Society 5.0, which integrates technology with human values.
Within this context, he discussed the Profit–People–Planet framework, a business paradigm that positions profit as the gateway to broader social and environmental impact. According to him, the goal of modern business is to create prosperity with humanity—shared prosperity that benefits society and future generations.
Oki further outlined four sustainability metrics that modern organizations must adopt: Design for Impact, Measure What Matters, Collaborate to Scale, and Leadership for Sustainability. These four principles serve as a compass for companies, educational institutions, and governments in making decisions grounded in sustainability and ethics.
The public lecture was enthusiastically received by students and lecturers of the Faculty of Economics UNU Jogja. Participants engaged actively in discussions on AI ethics, green finance, circular economy, and business strategies amid global pressures. Many noted that the topic is highly relevant to Indonesia’s ongoing efforts in digital transformation and sustainability.
The event concluded with Oki’s call for the younger generation to play an active role in shaping a more humane and sustainable business future. “We are not building businesses for today, but for future civilizations. Be leaders who are not only technologically competent but also morally grounded,” he urged. [Latifah]
