Yogyakarta, Indonesia - Through its Directorate of Communications, UNU Jogja conducted a series of media visits on 16–17 June 2025 to several newsrooms in Yogyakarta: detikcom, IDN Times, Tribun Jogja, Kompas, Republika, and Harian Jogja. The visits are part of communication and promotion strategies leading up to the 30th Career Days ECC x UNU Jogja on July 5–6, as well as New Student Admissions (PMB).
UNU Jogja’s Director of Communications, Intan Agisti, explained that the initiative aims to build strategic relationships and strengthen media exposure around admissions and the career fair, including UNU Jogja’s flagship programs, faculty and study program profiles, and the university’s positioning as a campus rooted in innovation and future-ready talent.
“Media responses have generally been very open and enthusiastic, and they expressed a commitment to support the publicity of Career Days and future collaboration opportunities. We are optimistic that this synergy will increase institutional visibility and public participation,” said Intan.
Riri Hapsari, Chair of Career Days, explained that this is UNU Jogja’s inaugural Career Days. However, it marks the 30th career fair held by the Engineering Career Center (ECC), an experienced talent and career development institution.
“This event is expected to offer solutions for job seekers amid the recent wave of layoffs. More than 25 industry partners from various sectors have confirmed their participation to scout top talent. Job applicants over the age of 30 are also welcome to take part in the selection,” said Riri.
Open free to the public, this program is more than a typical job fair. It also features Career Coaching, Company Talks, a Business Competition, a Blitz Hackathon, a Psychotest Tryout, and the highlight: Battle of Destiny, a leaderless group discussion (LGD) simulation that enables more precise selection of fresh graduates in front of leading companies.
In addition, job seekers at Career Days can enjoy a campus tour of UNU Jogja’s modern, futuristic, and Instagrammable nine-story building. This moment also serves to introduce UNU Jogja more broadly as part of 2025 Admissions (PMB).
Tri Yuliani, Acting Director of Admissions at UNU Jogja, added that PMB 2025 is now open. Year after year, the number of new students continues to increase. Of the 10 study programs, the Pharmacy Program in the Faculty of Halal Industry is the most popular among prospective students.
“One reason is that, compared to other campuses, tuition for UNU Jogja’s Pharmacy Program is relatively affordable at Rp11 million per semester, even though we have comprehensive and advanced pharmaceutical laboratories,” she said.
UNU Jogja offers not only academic programs but also skills enhancement and career mapping through coaching and various trainings.
In the near future, UNU Jogja will also open new academic programs: graduate programs at the MBZ College for Future Studies focusing on futures studies, and a new Metallurgical Engineering program that will pioneer urban mining to recycle electronic waste. These new programs are part of strategic collaborations with international partners from the United Arab Emirates and China.
During this marathon media visit, leaders of several media outlets responded positively to UNU Jogja’s programs. Beyond opening collaboration opportunities, UNU Jogja and media leaders in Yogyakarta exchanged views on the development of higher education.
Starting with a visit to detikcom’s office, Sukma Indah Permana, Editor-in-Chief of detikJogja-detikJateng, stated that the perspectives and research outputs from Yogyakarta campuses influence national coverage. “Therefore, UNU Jogja lecturers and researchers should frequently appear to respond to current and relevant issues in their fields,” Sukma said.
A similar hope was expressed by Haris Firdaus, Head of the DIY – Central Java Bureau of Harian Kompas and kompas.id. He sees opinion pieces by Yogyakarta academics enriching Indonesia’s intellectual landscape. “Especially in this digital era, issues evolve very quickly. Media are opening wider opportunities for writers who can analyze the latest issues,” Haris said.
Meanwhile, Fernan Rahadi, Head of Republika’s Bureau for DIY, Central Java, and East Java, highlighted the need for stronger synergy between campuses and the media industry, such as through the Certified Internship and Independent Study (MSIB) program. “We accept students to intern as reporters and cover campus activities, which is their world,” said Fernan.
At the same time, IDN Times editor Febriana Sintasari noted trends among students and the younger generation in the digital era. These developments require both media and campuses to stay adaptive. “They now use social media as a lifestyle reference,” Sinta said.
Ribut Raharjo, Editor-in-Chief of Tribun Jogja, hopes UNU Jogja will continue to broaden its reach in new student admissions, especially to attract students from outside Java. “UNU Jogja is already extraordinary, so it should be introduced even more widely through programs that both entertain and inspire,” he said.
Lastly, Nugroho Nurcahyo, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Harian Jogja, said that today’s media are required to collaborate with all parties, including universities. “With the broader reach of digital media, information from Yogyakarta—including developments at new campuses such as UNU Jogja—can be accessed by the large Yogyakarta diaspora,” he concluded.
