Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) has been selected as one of 22 universities nationwide to receive government support for establishing an Intellectual Property (IP) Center in 2026. Through this initiative, UNU Jogja is set to strengthen legal protection for thousands of research outputs and innovations while accelerating their commercialization and broader societal impact.
The support was granted under the Decree of the Directorate General of Research and Development of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) No. 526/DST/C4/HK.12/2026, issued on July 8, 2026. The assistance was awarded to 22 higher education institutions across Indonesia following a competitive selection process conducted by the Directorate of Commercialization and Partnerships.
Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Research, and Community Engagement Suhadi welcomed the selection of UNU Jogja, noting that the establishment of the IP Center would reinforce the university's growing research and scientific publication ecosystem.
Supported by 92 authors, UNU Jogja has accumulated a total SINTA score of 22,540 points. Its academic community has also produced 142 Scopus-indexed publications with 1,191 citations, 18 Web of Science-indexed documents, and 1,949 publications indexed by Google Scholar.
"This demonstrates UNU Jogja's growing consistency in contributing to the advancement of science, research, technology, and the arts," Suhadi said.
The university has also recorded significant growth in intellectual property (IP) filings. After submitting only two IP applications in 2023, the number rose to 12 in 2024 and more than doubled to 27 in 2025. By mid-2026, the university had already submitted 35 applications, bringing the total to 76 IP filings.
According to Suhadi, these achievements are only the beginning. UNU Yogyakarta remains committed to expanding its research, community service, scientific publications, and intellectual property registrations while ensuring stronger legal protection and greater benefits for society.
"That is why UNU Jogja applied for the competitive grant to establish an Intellectual Property Center, and we are grateful to have received it this year," he said.
Once established, the IP Center will provide consultation, mentoring, and patent application assistance for lecturers, students, and educational staff. The center will help ensure that research findings and community service innovations receive legal protection before they are publicly disclosed.
UNU Jogja also plans to accelerate the commercialization and downstream development of research through collaborations with businesses, industries, government agencies, and Nahdlatul Ulama's extensive network.
"The establishment of the Intellectual Property Center is expected to support the achievement of UNU Jogja Vision 2045 as a globally competitive university rooted in Aswaja Annahdliyah values while making meaningful contributions to the public good," Suhadi added.
Director of Research and Publications Irwan Novianto explained that, following the establishment of the IP Center, the university will organize mentoring programs, consultation services, and workshops on intellectual property.
He emphasized that the center will play a strategic role in strengthening the university's innovation ecosystem. Its primary function will be to provide legal protection for research and innovations, preventing academic work from being plagiarized or claimed by other parties.
The IP Center will also facilitate the commercialization of innovations by helping transfer research outcomes from the university to industry and the marketplace.
"This is closely related to the economic value of research. Properly protected intellectual property can open opportunities for business partnerships and generate royalty income," Irwan explained.
Equally important, he added, the center will enhance the university's reputation.
"The protection and utilization of intellectual property by various stakeholders will strengthen the university's reputation while creating broader benefits for society. This is what UNU Jogja aims to achieve through the establishment of the Intellectual Property Center," he concluded. [Arif]
